From young to old: health data in myInsel
When patients receive treatment from Insel Gruppe, they can subsequently view all their personal treatment information easily and conveniently in the myInsel patient portal. But how are access rights for children and young people regulated: who has access to their patient data, when is access permitted and in what form?
In principle, legal guardians have full access to their child’s health data up to the age of 12. However, data sovereignty is transferred to the young person from their 12th birthday.
Exceptions for those aged between 12 and 16
Access to the health data of young people is automatically withdrawn from parents and legal guardians on the young person’s 12th birthday (i.e. entering their 13th year of life). To continue using myInsel, young people aged 12 and over need their own myInsel account.
Note: for patient protection reasons, young people between the ages of 12 and 16 are not authorised to grant parents or legal guardians access to their health information in myInsel.
Up to the age of 12, parents and legal guardians have full access to their child’s health data via myInsel. To do this, they need their own myInsel account and the corresponding access authorisation.
Access to the health data of young people in myInsel is automatically withdrawn from parents and legal guardians once the young person reaches their 12th birthday. Young people can create their own myInsel account with full access to their own patient records.
If requested by the young person, parents and legal guardians can continue to be involved in all treatment and will be prioritised when it comes to receiving organisational information from Insel Gruppe.
The responsibilities of young people with regard to myInsel include:
- Regularly checking health data and appointments.
- Viewing reports and results following doctor’s appointments.
- Keeping contact details up to date.
From the age of 16, young people automatically receive access to the full version of myInsel including all available functions (such as the approval hub).
This gives young people the freedom to decide whether their parents or other people close to them should have access to their health data after their 16th birthday. If they decide to grant access, the guide for the myInsel sharing hub can be found here.
Parents and legal guardians can access their child’s health data in their own myInsel account, provided they have the appropriate access rights:
- Register for your own myInsel account here.
- If anything is unclear, there are instructions on how to register and activate:
- PDF instructions
- Explanatory video (only available in German)
- To obtain authorisation to access your child’s patient data in myInsel, please contact the myInsel Support Team or speak to a member of staff in person (at reception).
- Talk to your child about the upcoming access rights change.
- ownload any important documents and save them (e.g. vaccination certificate, important findings).
- Create an overview of ongoing treatments and medications for your child.
- Write down important contact details of doctors and health care providers for your child.
One month before your child’s 12th birthday, you will receive a message from us in your myInsel account: this will remind you that access to your child’s medical records will be withdrawn from you from your child’s 12th birthday.
- Help your child register for their own myInsel account.
- Respect your child’s privacy regarding their health data.
- Communicate with them regularly about important health issues.
- Encourage your child to use myInsel responsibly.
You will continue to act as a contact for Insel Gruppe with regard to organisational information and will be involved in ongoing treatment. Only the access to patient records via myInsel will no longer be possible.
- Talk to your child about the option of granting you access again.
- Respect your child’s decision.
- If desired: let your child add you as an authorised person using the myInsel sharing hub function.
Note regarding persons with permanent incapacity of judgement
Parents, legal guardians and legal representatives still have access to the health data of children or young people who are permanently incapable of judgement even after the young person’s 12th birthday.
Once the young person turns 12, please check whether your access is still working and, if necessary, contact our support team or your treatment team. Many thanks.
